You've chosen your effect, picked your colour, and added the kit to your cart. Before you hit "buy," let's make sure you have everything. There's nothing worse than starting a project Saturday morning and realising you're missing a tool.
What's already in every kit
Every Primacol decorative paint is sold as a complete kit. Here's what's included:
Silver Sand: Decobase + Silver Sand effect paint. ~10m² coverage.
Moonlight: Decobase + Moonlight paint. ~12m² coverage.
Mystic: Decobase + Mystic paint. ~10m² coverage.
Concrete Effect: Paint + protective varnish + contact primer. ~4m² coverage.
Metaliq: Decobase + Metaliq Paste + Metaliq Top. ~10m² coverage.
Polaris: Decobase + Polaris paint. ~7m² coverage. Venetian trowel required.
Royal Silk: Decobase + Royal Silk paint (+ colourant for tinted shades). 7–9m² coverage. Venetian trowel required.
Modern Stone: Decobase + Modern Stone paste + varnish. ~6m² coverage. Spatula required.
Let's Shine: Ready to use - no Decobase needed. Apply directly over existing paint for a glitter overlay.
What you need to add (essential)
For Silver Sand, Moonlight, and Mystic:
Flat paint brush (102mm)
This is the essential tool. The specific bristle type and width are designed to create the right texture. A regular paintbrush may not give the same result. One brush is enough for multiple walls.
Paint roller + tray
For applying Decobase. A medium-pile roller gives the best coverage. Available at any hardware store.
Painter's tape
For masking edges, ceiling line, adjoining walls, skirting boards, sockets. Good quality tape that won't bleed is worth the extra cost.
For Concrete Effect Paint:
Paint roller + tray for primer and first coat and varnish.
Plastic trowel for smoothing the concrete texture.
Venetian trowel for the final polishing pass.
Fine sandpaper (180“200 grit) for smoothing between coats.
Mechanical mixer or drill with mixing attachment the paint is thick and needs thorough mixing.
For Metaliq:
Venetian trowel must have smooth, sharp edges. If in doubt, sharpen with 2000-grit sandpaper.
Spatula for applying Metaliq Top.
Paint roller for Decobase application.
Fine sandpaper (180“200 grit) for smoothing between layers.
Slow mechanical mixer for mixing the paste.
For Polaris and Royal Silk:
Venetian trowel the primary application tool. Same trowel works for both products.
Paint roller for Decobase application.
For Modern Stone:
Spatula for smoothing the paste and creating the stone pattern.
Paint roller for Decobase and varnish (separate rollers).
Fine sandpaper for smoothing between layers and before the polishing step.
Nice to have (recommended)
Primacol Primer
Recommended if your wall is very absorbent (new plaster, bare drywall) or if you're unsure about the surface. It evens out absorption so the Decobase goes on consistently. Not always necessary, but a smart insurance policy.
Sample Folders Set
Handmade samples of every effect in the range. If you're torn between two effects or colours, these let you see and feel the real textures in your own room, in your own light. Much better than guessing from photos.
Dust sheets
Protect your floors and furniture. Decorative paint doesn't splash like regular paint (you're using a brush, not a roller for the effect coat), but drops happen. Canvas or plastic sheets from any hardware store.
A stepladder
You'll need to reach the top of the wall comfortably. Working with a brush at full stretch gives you less control than working at a comfortable height.
Quick coverage calculator
Measure your wall: height (metres) × width (metres) = area in m². Then match to coverage:
Wall under 10m² - 1 kit of Silver Sand, Moonlight, Mystic or Metaliq
Wall under 12m² -1 kit of Moonlight (largest coverage)
Wall 8m² 2 kits of Concrete Effect
When in doubt, round up. Having a little leftover paint is better than running out mid-wall and you can use it for touch-ups later.
